Key Botanicals
Situated adjacent to the water meadows, our kitchen gardens at Thyme are an abundant space where neat rows of carrots, radishes and runner beans flourish, alongside carefully selected flavoursome and unusual varieties of flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables. As you wander, breathe in the deliciously fragrant notes of blackcurrant leaves, rhubarb and tomato vine. Our designs are deeply rooted in this special place, celebrating the beauty in humble, home-grown vegetables.
The tomato, often thought of as a vegetable is in fact a berry. It originated in South America and was cultivated by the Aztecs before being brought to Europe by the Spanish who adopted the Aztec name tomati. As it gradually spread to France and Italy it acquired more romantic names, ‘apple of love’ (pomme d’amour ) and ‘the golden apple’ (pommodoro) respectively. Interestingly, tomatoes were first ornamental, before being embraced in cuisine after some initial suspicion.
